Invest in 4 matching winter tires. Made from softer rubber, they provide better traction in extreme cold
Check for proper inflation prior to setting out
Keep a bucket of an abrasive like salt, sand or ash in the trunk of your car with a small or collapsable spade for digging out snow and spreading abrasive
Keep one or two pairs of snow chains on hand in case you are caught in a snowstorm - these provide superior traction, but cannot be driven over 30 MPH
Some snowtires will accept studs for additional traction, but be sure they are legal in your state
